Toyota Prado 150 CarPlay Upgrade Guide — All Series 2009 to 2023

Toyota Prado 150 CarPlay Upgrade Guide — All Series 2009 to 2023 - EXTNIX

Asad Amin |

The Toyota LandCruiser Prado 150 Series has been one of Australia's most popular family SUVs since 2009 — and for good reason. It's capable, reliable, and built for everything from school runs to serious off-road trips. The one thing it's never been great at is infotainment.

Factory head units across the Prado 150 range — even in the later 2018–2023 facelift models — lack wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If you're still fumbling with a cable every time you get in the car, or squinting at a low-resolution screen with sluggish response, this guide is for you.

At Extnix, we stock plug-and-play wireless CarPlay head units for every Prado 150 150 variant from 2009 through to 2023. No cutting, no permanent modifications — your factory wiring stays intact.

Which Prado 150 do you have?

The Prado 150 ran through three distinct interior generations, each with different dash configurations. It's important to match the unit to your exact build year — the wiring harness and fascia fit are different across generations.

Your Prado Compatible variants Upgrade

2014 – 2017 GX and GXL only View the 2014–2017 unit →
2018 – 2023 GX and GXL only View the 2018–2023 unit →

⚠️ VX, Kakadu and Altitude models are not compatible across all generations. These variants use factory JBL amplified systems and in some cases 360-degree cameras, which require a different configuration. If you have a VX or above, contact us before ordering and we'll advise the right path.

Prado 150 GX/GXL 2009–2013

The first-generation Prado 150 is still a hugely popular upgrade candidate — there are a lot of them on Australian roads and the factory head unit is well and truly showing its age by now. This unit is a direct plug-and-play replacement for the standard GX and GXL system.

Key things to know for the 2009–2013 build:

  • The hazard light switch relocates to the left of the unit after installation — slight trimming around the switch fitting may be required
  • Factory USB, AUX and voice command buttons are not retained
  • Factory trip computer is not retained on GXL models
  • A factory camera retention kit is available separately if you have a factory reverse camera

Prado 150 GX/GXL 2014–2017

The mid-series Prado 150 received a significant interior refresh in 2014, including updated climate controls. The upgrade for this generation retains more factory features than the earlier model — including your factory reverse camera, USB port, and steering wheel controls.

Key things to know for the 2014–2017 build:

  • Factory reverse camera, USB port and steering wheel controls are all retained
  • Plug-and-play wiring harness included — no splicing required
  • Hazard light switch relocates to the left after installation
  • Not compatible with VX, Kakadu and Altitude models with JBL sound system

👉 Shop the Prado 150 GX/GXL 2014–2017 head unit — from $649 AUD. Free shipping, Australian stock.

Prado 150 GX/GXL 2018–2023

The facelifted Prado received a sharper exterior and revised interior in 2018, but the infotainment still didn't get wireless CarPlay. This generation uses a slightly different dash configuration, and the upgrade unit is designed specifically for the post-facelift layout.

Key things to know for the 2018–2023 build:

  • Plug-and-play wiring to suit GX and GXL models without factory amplifier
  • Factory reverse camera retention kit included
  • Not compatible with Kakadu or VX/Altitude models with JBL factory amplified system or 360 camera
  • Some fascia or clip trimming may be required

👉 Shop the Prado 150 GX/GXL 2018–2023 head unit — from $699 AUD. Free shipping, Australian stock.

What you get with every Prado 150 upgrade

Every Extnix head unit for the Prado 150 includes:

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay — no cable needed, connects automatically when you get in the car
  • Wireless Android Auto — same seamless experience for Android users
  • 10" IPS or QLED touchscreen — bright, sharp display that's a significant upgrade on the factory screen
  • Built-in GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth 5.0
  • DSP amplifier — improved audio output across your existing speakers
  • 36 months Australian warranty (on orders from 1 May 2026)
  • Australian stock — ships from Melbourne, typically 3–5 business days

Installation

All Prado 150 head units are plug-and-play — the wiring harness is vehicle-specific and plugs directly into your factory loom. That said, due to the hazard switch relocation on most variants, we strongly recommend professional installation for this model.

We have a full step-by-step installation guide available specifically for the Prado 150 GX/GXL, including photos of every stage of the process.

Not sure which unit fits your Prado?

If you're unsure of your exact build year or variant, the easiest way to check is your compliance plate (inside the driver's door jamb) — it'll show the month and year of manufacture. Alternatively, send us a message with your rego or a photo of your dash and we'll confirm compatibility before you order.
