Quick answer: If your reverse camera suddenly shows static, snow, or a blank screen, it's almost always a mismatched camera format setting — not a broken camera. Go to Settings > Camera on your head unit and re-select the format that matches your camera (usually AHD 720p 30fps for Extnix-supplied cameras, or NTSC for many third-party and factory-fit cameras). The full steps are below.
Why Your Reverse Camera Shows Static or No Image
Your head unit needs to know exactly what video format your reverse camera is broadcasting in before it can display a clean picture. If that format setting doesn't match the camera — which commonly happens after a software update, a factory reset, or a head unit reinstall — the screen shows static, snow, or nothing at all, even though the camera itself is working perfectly fine.
This is one of the most common reverse camera issues we see, and in almost every case it takes under a minute to fix without any tools or wiring changes.
How to Fix a Static or Missing Reverse Camera Image
Watch the full walkthrough below, or follow the written steps underneath it.
- Put the car in reverse so the reverse camera feed comes up on screen.
- Tap the settings icon that appears on the reverse camera screen.
- Go into Camera in the settings menu that opens.
- Select the format that matches your camera. For reverse cameras supplied by Extnix, this is AHD 720p 30fps.
- Check the picture. Still static or distorted? Cycle through the other formats (NTSC or PAL) until the image is clear.
Once the correct format is selected, the reverse camera image comes back immediately — no further setup needed.
AHD vs NTSC vs CVBS — Which Setting Should You Use?
These are the three video formats you'll usually see in the camera settings menu:
| Format | What it is | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| AHD (720p) | Analog High Definition — a sharper, digital-quality image over a standard analog cable | Reverse cameras supplied by Extnix, and most modern AHD-labelled aftermarket cameras |
| NTSC | An older standard-definition analog format | Many third-party or factory-fit reverse cameras, especially older ones |
| CVBS / PAL | Composite analog video, the other common standard-definition format | Some factory reverse cameras and older aftermarket units |
If you're not sure which one your camera uses, it's fine to try each option — nothing will be damaged, and the correct setting will be obvious as soon as the picture clears up.
Still Not Working? Other Things to Check
If you've cycled through every format option and still aren't getting a picture, the issue is more likely wiring or connection related rather than a settings problem:
- Check the camera's video and power connections are firmly seated
- Confirm the camera is wired to the reverse (reverse light) trigger wire correctly
- Check for any damage along the camera cable run, especially near the boot/tailgate hinge

Compatible Extnix Head Unit Models
This camera settings menu works the same way across the full Extnix range — Entry (T133), Standard (TS18), Premium and Ultimate (TS105) — as well as most previous-generation Extnix infotainment systems.
Also Works on Topway & Toparea-Based Head Units
Extnix head units are built on the Topway / Toparea platform, the same underlying software used across a wide range of aftermarket Android head units sold under other brand names. So if you're running a Topway, Toparea, or similarly-branded unit and hitting the same static, snowy, or blank reverse camera image, the exact same fix applies — the Settings > Camera menu and format options (AHD, NTSC, CVBS) are laid out the same way.
Frequently Asked Questions
My reverse camera worked fine before and just stopped — do I need a new camera?
Almost never. A sudden switch to static or a blank screen is nearly always a format mismatch in the settings, not a faulty camera. Try the steps above first.
Will changing the camera format reset any of my other head unit settings?
No — this only changes the camera video format and won't affect your Apple CarPlay/Android Auto setup, radio, or other preferences.
What's the difference between AHD and NTSC on a reverse camera?
AHD (Analog High Definition) gives a sharper 720p picture and is the format used by Extnix-supplied cameras. NTSC is an older, lower-resolution analog standard used by some third-party and factory-fit cameras. Selecting the wrong one is what causes the static or snowy image.
I tried every format option and still get no image — what now?
That points to a wiring or connection issue rather than a settings issue. Check the wiring guide linked above, or get in touch with our support team and we'll help you troubleshoot further.
