Why Australian Drivers Are Installing Dash Cams

Dash cam ownership has surged across Australia over the past few years — and for good reason. On busy roads like Melbourne's Monash Freeway, Sydney's M1, or Queensland's Bruce Highway, incidents happen fast and witnesses disappear even faster.

Australian drivers install dash cams primarily for three reasons:

  • Insurance dispute protection — Footage from dash cams is now routinely submitted to Australian insurers including NRMA, AAMI, RACV and Budget Direct as evidence in at-fault disputes. Having clear video of an incident can be the difference between a successful claim and paying an excess you shouldn't owe.
  • Protection from fraudulent claims — Staged accidents and false insurance claims do occur on Australian roads. A dash cam provides objective evidence that protects you from dishonest drivers.
  • Recording road trips and incidents — From the Great Ocean Road to the Nullarbor, Australians use dash cams to capture memorable drives and unexpected road events.
  • Rideshare Saftey - Choose a 3-channel setups for rideshare drivers (Uber, DiDi, Ola, Taxi), and 4K models with Sony STARVIS 2 sensors for exceptional night vision and low-light clarity.

Note: While some overseas insurers offer premium discounts for dash cam users, Australian insurers have not yet widely adopted this practice. However, footage value in dispute resolution is well established locally.

Dash Cam Image Quality — What Actually Matters

Resolution numbers alone don't tell the full story. Here's what to actually look at when comparing dash cams:

  • Resolution — 1080p Full HD is the minimum for reliable number plate capture. 2K and 4K deliver sharper detail, especially useful for reading plates at distance or in motion. All our recommended cameras record at 1080p minimum, with most flagship models at 4K.
  • Frame rate — Higher frame rates (60fps) produce smoother footage, making fast-moving details like number plates easier to read. Standard is 30fps; premium models like the VIOFO A329S offer 4K at 60fps.
  • CMOS sensor — The sensor converts light into image data. Sony STARVIS 2 sensors, used in the VIOFO range, are among the best available for low-light performance — critical for night driving on unlit Australian rural roads.
  • Lens quality — Two cameras with the same resolution can produce very different results depending on lens quality. Always check real-world sample footage before purchasing.
  • HDR / WDR — High Dynamic Range helps balance bright and dark areas in the same frame — important for driving into the sun or out of a tunnel, common scenarios on Australian roads.

Dash Cam Installation in Australia

Despite the name, most dash cams are mounted on the windscreen behind the rear-view mirror — not on the dashboard. This keeps them discreet and out of your sightlines.

There are two main installation approaches:

  • Plug-in (cigarette lighter / 12V socket) — Quick and removable, but cables can be visible and the camera only records when the engine is running. Fine for basic use.
  • Hardwired installation — The camera is wired directly into your vehicle's fuse box, hiding all cables for a clean factory finish. This also enables parking mode — the camera continues recording while your car is parked and unattended, ideal for street parking in Australian cities. Professional hardwire installation typically costs $100–$180 in Australia.

For dual-channel front and rear setups, the rear camera cable runs along the roofline and down the rear pillar. In hatchbacks and wagons the rear camera typically mounts on the upper rear windscreen; in sedans and SUVs it may mount near the number plate or rear window.

Memory Cards for Dash Cams

Dash cams write data continuously and at high speeds — a standard SD card will fail quickly under this load. Always use a high-endurance or industrial-grade microSD card rated for dash cam use. We stock purpose-built VIOFO industrial-grade cards in 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and 512GB sizes.

Estimated recording time at 1080p 30fps:

  • 64GB — approx. 8 hours front only / 4 hours front + rear
  • 128GB — approx. 16 hours front only / 8 hours front + rear
  • 256GB — approx. 32 hours front only / 16 hours front + rear

Dash cams record in a continuous loop, automatically overwriting the oldest footage when the card is full — so you always have the most recent footage saved. Incident clips triggered by G-sensor are locked and protected from overwriting.

Key Features to Look For

  • GPS — Records your speed and location alongside footage. Useful for disputing speeding fines and verifying your position during an incident. Some models overlay speed data directly onto the video.
  • Parking mode — Continues recording while parked. Uses motion or impact detection to trigger recording, protecting your vehicle from hit-and-run incidents in car parks and on street.
  • Wi-Fi — Allows you to view and download footage directly to your phone via the manufacturer's app. No need to remove the SD card.
  • Night vision / Sony STARVIS 2 — Critical for Australian night driving. Sony STARVIS 2 sensors deliver exceptional low-light clarity for capturing number plates and details in the dark.
  • 1CH / 2CH / 3CH — Single camera (front only), dual channel (front + rear), or 3-channel (front + rear + cabin). 3CH is the standard choice for Uber, DiDi, Ola and taxi drivers across Australia.
  • CPL filter — A circular polarising lens filter reduces dashboard reflections on the windscreen — particularly useful in Australia's bright sunlight conditions.
